The need for a larger Voisin aeroplane capable of carrying more load led to the Voisin 7, which used the 180hp Renault 8G engine on all operation aircraft. The wingspan was enlarged and detachable fuel tanks were carried, ready to be jettisoned in case of a fire. Even taking into account the new engine, the Voisin 7 was underpowered and was only used by army cooperation escadrilles. Serbia acquired some Voisin 7s when one unit was turned over to their air force in 1917. [1] The Renault engine was thought to be more reliable than the early Salmsons, so this model was preferred for longer reconnaissance missions.[2]
