The first two Standard E-1 prototypes, produced in January 1918, were later matched by another 98 in November. The type did not see combat during the war, which is perhaps fortunate because the type was closer to 1916 horsepower and armament than 1918.
Thirty heavier versions, intended as trainers, were built with the 100hp Gnome rotary.[1]
