Experiments with a ground-attack version of the Sopwith Camel led to the development of the Sopwith T.F.2 Salamander. The Salamander owed much of its structure to the Sopwith Snipe and it used the same engine, though it had a flat-sided fuselage and pilot's headrest. Six hundred fifty pounds of armor protected the front half of the plane from ground fire. The prototype was sent to France for service trials in May 1918. Production was ramping up, but only two had reached France before the Armistice. [1]
