Phönix was not immune to the distraction that was the Knoller aeroplanes. In late December 1915 they were awarded a contract for forty-eight Knoller C.I(Ph) biplanes with 200hp Hiero engines, Series 25. Three prototypes were completed with 160hp engines and sent to Flik 23 in November 1916 and found to be unacceptable. Nevertheless a second order arrived in December, only to be cancelled. Where they were used, they had to be flown carefully: tests later showed the wings would fail at only moderate loading. Many C.Is produced were simply sent to warehouses to wait out the war. [1]
