The biggest limitation of the Albatros J.I was the lack of armor to cover the nose and engine, leaving it at a distinct disadvantage to planes like the Junkers J.I and A.E.G. J.I. Albatros corrected that in 1918, resulting in the Albatros J.II. The J.II went one step further and also armored the radiator. Like its predecessor, climb and ceiling remained anemic, but that was not a problem for a plane designed for ground attack. Four ailerons were introduced for better controllability.[2]
